Services between Barrhead and Glasgow are set to be hit by 24-hour strike action this week on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

The dispute by RMT workers centres on the union's claim that ScotRail has adopted an irresponsible stance over its plan to bring in more driver-operated only (DOO) trains, in a way the union insists will compromise safety.

ScotRail has strongly denied this while defending its safety record, and insists there is no need for strike, but the RMT – arguing expansion of DOO trains undermines its members' conditions - has accused it of taking “a lethal gamble” with safety.

Meanwhile ScotRail has condemned the strike as “needless” and of “misleading” the public on several issues.

On Monday both sides were at loggerheads over the timing and conditions in which any talks aimed at breaking the deadlock could take place.

Tuesday's threatened 24-hour strike affects selected services, including the Barrhead to Glasgow route, although several west of Scotland local routes are said to be unaffected.

It's understood ScotRail plans to run many normal services during Tuesday's strike, but few replacement bus services are thought likely for affected routes.

RMT plans further action if the issue cannot be resolved.
