Uplawmoor Tennis Club served up a cracking Open Day last Sunday (May 15) with over a dozen youngsters packing the courts for coaching sessions, and a number of adults keen to join the club.

The Open Day was part of the Lawn Tennis Association’s Great British Tennis Weekend, which is a nationwide initiative to boost interest in tennis at grass roots level.

Uplawmoor president Murray Pollok said: “I think we can safely say we increased interest in Tennis in this area, and in doing so we reinforced Uplawmoor Tennis Club’s growing reputation as a real social hub for the village.

“It was great to see our new all-weather courts packed to capacity with youngsters being coached on a couple of the courts and potential new recruits among the grown-ups playing on the third.

“The youngsters who came along were absolutely fantastic and so keen to learn it was a pleasure to work with them. In fact they were enjoying it so much that we had to extend the time we had allocated to junior coaching in the programme”.

And nobody can say that Uplawmoor doesn’t start them young with a couple of four year olds, amongst the older children and teenagers taking part.

Fireman Kevin Bell who moved to Uplawmoor relatively recently said: “My daughter Maia, 6, is already a member and I am planning to join the club along with a couple of friends I have made since moving to the village.

“There is a great atmosphere at the Tennis Club, which has done a first class job of making everyone feel welcome and part of the proceedings”.

Apart from the on-court activities the club laid on strawberries and cream and other refreshment for all those taking part.

The club also runs coaching sessions for pupils from Uplawmoor Primary from 3.30 to 6.0pm every Thursday, catering for youngsters from P1-P7.
