AN aspiring fashion designer from Barrhead has triumphed in a competition run by a leading fabric company.

Nicole Brownlee, who is currently honing her skills by studying BA Textiles at Glasgow Clyde College, was tasked with designing and printing a range of fabric samples for Remnant Kings.

The 18-year-old impressed judges with her take on the brief, which asked participants to create a commercially-viable collection based on the floral theme ‘Graphic Bloom’.

The former Williamwood High School pupil placed third in the innovative contest, overcoming competition from more than 40 other talented students.

Nicole said: “I really enjoyed taking part in this competition and was really surprised when it was announced that I’d come in third.

"I spent time taking photographs and drawing sketches at Glasgow Botanic Gardens as I was really inspired by all the flowers there.

"The fact that industry professionals have complimented work I created whilst still at college has given me a huge confidence boost.”

After completing two years of study at Glasgow Clyde College, Nicole is set to progress into third year of the BA Textiles course at Heriot-Watt University in Galashiels.

Recent graduates of the course have gone on to work for renowned fashion and interior designers including Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham.

Nicole said: “I’ve been interested in art since I was a child but I didn’t know much about textiles until I was in my last year of school.

"I love designing prints and being able to put my own stamp on things.

"Once I graduate, I’d like to freelance as a print designer for both fashion and interiors.”

Angela Macmillan, senior lecturer in Textiles at Glasgow Clyde College, added: “Students and staff at Glasgow Clyde College have a great partnership with Remnant Kings and this collaborative competition gave our students the opportunity to experience what working to a commercial brief is like, whilst engaging with industry professionals.

"We were all blown away by the standard of work that was produced and Nicole should be incredibly proud of her success.”

Hazel Berryman, assistant buyer at Remnant Kings, added: “Remnant Kings were once again delighted to sponsor the Print Design module at Glasgow Clyde College.

"We loved the application of the students’ prints on our fabrics. It was clear to see the students’ evolution from line drawings to the finished prints, which were all commercially appealing and would sit perfectly alongside our wider fabric offering.

"As always, the students’ work was presented beautifully, making it a difficult decision for us to pick our favourites.”
