LUSS Primary School pupils have chosen udderly impressive names for two of the village's newest residents.

The Loch Lomond Arms Hotel has welcomed two Highland cows, Mooriel and Moorag, and their calves to the field next to the hotel's landscaped gardens.

Young scholars had no beef with the cute cattle joining the community and celebrated their arrival by selecting names for the calves.

The plush hotel launched a naming competition for the calves on Facebook and received almost 50 entries – it was then up to the children to select their favourites from the shortlist.

Some of the entries drew on traditional Scottish names, some popular culture –including names from hit historic Scottish drama Outlander – while others used more high-brow references like the suggestion of Willa and Walter, after authors Sir Walter Scott and Willa Muir.

Pupils had the tough task of choosing from the names: Bonnie and Argyll; Bessie and Walter McMoo; Harris and Skye; Jamie and Claire; Willa and Walter as well as Cooie McCooface and Bella Bellisimoo.

However, rather than embracing the comedic options they opted for the classic island names of Harris and Skye for the calves.

Iain Hamilton, general manager at the Loch Lomond Arms Hotel, was delighted to get the young residents in on the fun calling them the 'obvious' decision makers.

He told the Advertiser: "Luss Primary School is very close and the children have been to visit our new arrivals, so it seemed obvious that they would be the right people to select the names for the little calves.

"The children surprised us and voted for island-inspired names Harris and Skye and rejected some of the more amusing options, like Walter McMoo and Cooie Mc Cooface.

"Some of the children of Luss Primary School pass the cows every day so we were delighted that they were able to cast the final vote on the names."
