PUPILS from St John’s Primary had a ‘magnifique’ time taking part in their annual French Day.

Several children even dressed up as Messieurs and Mademoiselles for the occasion, with numerous striped tops and berets on display.

Youngsters participated in a series of French-related activities, including Eiffel Tower model-making, quizzes, interactive games and a concert involving the school’s eight classes.

The quiz winners were presented with certificates during an assembly in the gym hall which finished with a whole school finale of ‘Tête, épaules, genoux et pieds’ or ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes’ after each class had performed a French song of their own.

Attentive waiters and waitresses from primary five helped to run a French café in the afternoon which served up a fine selection of baguettes and croissants to hungry pupils who all placed their orders in French.

Elaine O’Donnell, depute head at St John’s, praised the kids for their enthusiasm and said: “It’s been really successful and the children get so excited about it – they really buy into it.

“We do French right through the school from primary one. They actually start it in the nursery in East Renfrewshire so, by the time they’re moving up the school, it’s amazing to see the progress they make.

“It’s a great way to showcase and celebrate all the learning in the different classes. Each year it seems to get better and better.”

Prizes were also awarded to Harris MacMillan and of primary three and primary four’s Islay McLaughlin who were voted the best dressed boy and girl.

Pupils rounded the day off by creating wall display materials and playing games on Linguascope – a learning platform that enables primary schools to deliver language curriculums through purposeful and engaging online activities.

St John’s Primary was joined by St Mark’s Primary and St Thomas’ Primary in holding a French Day on Friday, May 6.
