Youngsters played a dangerous game of chicken in Carlibar park using live fireworks, before aiming the rockets in to Asda’s underground carpark and launching them towards shoppers.

One woman and carrying a baby was forced to run for cover when a high-powered rocket came screaming towards them as they exited the Main Street supermarket on Thursday.

One 20-year-old, Connor Gillanders, witnessed the entire incident, and was sent scrambling for cover himself as he watched the rocket “streak” towards him.

He said: “I had actually been in Asda buying fireworks and I was coming out of the doors that lead in to the underground car park.

“I saw the rocket flying towards me through the car park as I was coming through the door – it exploded about a meter in front of me I was carrying two big boxes of fireworks at the time.

“A mum and her baby were very near me too.

“They are a bunch of idiots, they’re putting lives at risk they could have badly hurt that woman and her baby.” The incident was reported to police who dedicated an extra patrol to the area on the night.

The firework is thought to have been launched from Carlibar Park, where youths have been causing trouble recently by setting fire to playpark equipment and vandalising local properties.

The News recently reported how specialist police on off-road motorbikes had been drafted in to patrol the parks and streets in the area.

But despite this alarming incident, police say they had one of the quietest bonfire nights on record.

Deputy area commander Alan Dickson said: “It has been a quiet year in East Renfrewshire for bonfire night.

“While we obviously had a higher call rate than what is normal, it was relatively low level compared to what we have experienced in recent years.

“We put this down to increased safety awareness and more people attending organised displays.

“I can confirm that staff at Asda in Barrhead made a call regarding an incident of fireworks being fired at the store, and we reacted by placing additional attention on the area to try and prevent this kind of thing from happening again.

“I would ask anyone with any information on the incident to contact us on the non emergency number 101.”
