GIRLS ALOUD AND ACTIVE

But the pupils from P6/P7, in both Barrhead and Neilston, have become Active Women and Girls, as opposed to the wives and girlfriends of millionaire footballers.

And they were just as pretty, if not prettier than Posh, Colleen and the others, as the youngsters joined their mums in active sport and dance.

The Active WAGs project was organised by School co-ordinator, Marie Bennett, who said: “There is a huge emphasis on health and physical activity.

“Girls are less likely to be active and more likely to drop out of sport and exercise as they approach adolescence and we are keen to tackle this trend.

“There was nothing in the Barrhead area that both girls and their mums could attend together and the response we had was overwhelming.”

Almost 50 mums and daughters attended every week taking part in a range of activities, including salsa, bellydancing, kickboxing, aqua-aerobics and much more.

Clubs based in the town, linked with Active Schools and delivered some of the sessions, which all the mothers and daughters enjoyed.

On the last night they all enjoyed a ladies night that included netball games, smoothie making, nail bar and reiki, but there is a good chance the WAGs will be running again soon .

Active Schools hope to run the programme in partnership with sports development.

Both groups will join forces and offer more activities in the area that both mothers and their daughters can attend.
