Cross country championships

HUNDREDS of youngsters descended on Linwood Sports centre last week, to compete in the annual Renfrewshire Schools Cross Country Championships.
The morning started off with the S1 boys race and this was a 1-2 for Johnstone High School with Jack Haggerty a clear winner in 5 minutes 28 seconds and Nicholas Love just holding off Matthew Fender from St Andrews Academy, for second place. With 4 to count in the team race, good packing from Gleniffer HS won them the team title ahead of Johnstone HS and Castlehead HS.
There was also a convincing winner in the S1 girls race, Laura McEwan’s time of 6.17, putting her 80 metres ahead of Cleo Jackson from Gryffe HS, with Abbigail Park from Castlehead HS a close third.
Gryffe won the team title ahead of Castlehead and St Andrews.
Steven Howie, Gryffe HS, won a competitive race for S2 boys, time 7.22, and Jack Lochans, Paisley GS and Euan McCormack, Gleniffer HS took the other medal places. Gleniffer HS won the team race with Gryffe second and St Andrews third.
Kate Gillies from Park Mains HS, had the most emphatic win of the day in 7.47, with Emma Haddock from St Andrews 200m behind in 2nd place and Robyn Lewis, Park Mains, 120 metres further back in 3rd place. Park Mains counting runners finished 1,3,4,5, for the most clearcut team victory of the day, Gleniffer were 2nd and Castlehead 3rd.
In the S3 boys race, Connor Ramsay from St Andrews won in 7.01, just edging out Jamie Reid from Johnstone HS with Scott Lindsay from Gleniffer High a close third. Winning team was Gryffe HS with St Andrews 2nd and Johnstone HS third.
Sorcha Lynch, St Andrews, was another clear winner, time of 8.16 giving a margin of 200m over Charlotte Walker, Gryffe HS, with Lauren McDonald from Trinity HS in third place. Gryffe HS won a very close team race, just one point ahead of St Andrews with Castlehead third.
The Primary Schools races, took place after lunch and the good weather from the morning continued into the afternoon and helped to ensure a fantastic, colourful spectacle as literally 100s of youngsters, competed with great enthusiasm.
The P6 races were dominated by the Gillham family from Bridge of Weir Primary.
Gwen won the girls race from Rachel McGinn, also Bridge of Weir. Iona McEntee from Wallace Primary was third and Bridge of Weir was first team.
Euan Gillham won the P6 boys race with Rory John from Lochwinnoch 2nd and Alan Sharp, Wallace PS in 3rd. Arkleston Primary packed well to win the team title.
Johanna McQuade, Houston PS, won an exciting P7 girls race, with Katie Robertson, St Peter’s PS second and Abigail Reilly, Lochwinnoch 3rd. Lochwinnoch won the team event with Bushes PS 2nd and Bridge of Weir 3rd.
It was also a close race for the P7 boys title, with Kane O’Neill, Lochwinnoch, just holding off Scott Mochan, Arkleston, with Angus Bell, Bridge of Weir, just behind in third place. Heriot Primary packed well to win the team race.
Brendan Tracey, Managing Director of Strathclyde Tyre Services, made the presentations, assisted by Councillor Eileen McCartin and both expressed their delight at the success of the day.
