GIFFNOCK North Athletics club were represented at the ScottishPower National Cross Country Championships.

They competed along with thousands of athletes aged from 11 to senior from all over the country, as they tested their stamina in the historical grounds of Callendar Park in Falkirk,

And they struck gold with a superb performance by the under-13 girls who out-ran what was a very high-standard of competition at the meeting.

Other well-known clubs in the competition were youngsters from Bellahouston RR, Bellahouston Harriers City of Glasgow, Garscube Harriers, Kilbarchan AAC, Glasgow School of Sport, Maryhill Harriers, Shettleston Harriers, Westerlands CCC, Victoria Park and Strathclyde Uni Harriers.

ScottishPower was delighted to be sponsoring the event for the fourth year running and is happy to see young athletes swapping power-draining computer games and TVs for the tracks.

The environmentally-aware energy provider also offered a total cash prize of £5,000 in the popular event, which saw the highest entries for a decade.

Jim Paterson, sales and marketing director of ScottishPower said: “The event was a huge success, with even more athletes taking part compared to last year. It’s a great experience for the younger, grassroots level athletes as they are particularly inspired by the senior competitors.

“Our sponsorship with athletics provides assistance to youngsters across Scotland, many of whom will one day represent our country. We are really proud to be witnessing these athletes develop from the grassroots level to potential superstars in the sport.”
