Kind teenager"s India mission

MISSION: Craig is off to India this summer.

A BARRHEAD teenager will be jetting off this summer to help deprived children in India with the money raised by primary school pupils.

Craig Fisher from Parkhouse will be flying out on July 5 for one month to help in an all-girls orphanage in India.

The student will make the pilgrimage as part of the Christian organisation"s Lasallian Developing World Project which aims to educate people in Britain and provides aid to countries all over the world, including Africa, Brazil and the Phillipines.

During his visit, Craig will be helping out in the English and Maths classes as well as visiting people in hospitals and building a study hall for the kids.

He heard about the project when he was a pupil at St. Ninian"s High School in Giffnock who send pupils abroad every year.

But despite being offered the opportunity to take part while still in school, he made the decision to wait a year and get involved now before beginning a three year full time course at the Glasgow Academy of Musical Theatre Arts.

Craig began raising funds by helping out at his old primary school, St Angela"s, Darnley, and it was through this visit that he was able to enlist the help of the kids from Antonine Primary in Drumchapel.

He said: 'The head teacher at my old primary had daughters that worked at Antonine Primary and once they heard about my India trip, they approached me and said they would help to raise money. Education is the most important thing to beat poverty.

'When I come back, I plan on visiting Antoine Primary and preparing a presentation to show the kids what I did over there and what their money went towards.

'I think this will help raise their awareness about the problems in these countries.'

The pupils managed to raise £331 while Craig himself did a 10K run which raised £400 and regularly takes the kids for circuit training and helps out in classes.
