ROOF TOP SIEGE
By Amanda Keenan
A BARRHEAD man taunted cops in a dramatic six-hour rooftop siege by shouting: “You’re in for a long wait scum.”
The 24-year-old clambered on to the roof after being cornered by CID and police officers who swooped at 8am on Friday morning.
Stunned onlookers watched as the man shouted obscenities at cops and taunted them by saying “I’m going to be up here all night or even all weekend.”
One neighbour told how the raid on the property in Grampian Way unfolded.
He said: “The police arrived about 8am and cornered off the street about 9am.
“CID officers wearing bullet-proof vests went into the house and around 9.30am they emptied the house and sent a man with a dog and two young girls out while they waited it out for the guy on the roof.
“Just after 1.30pm, he was passed a phone through a skylight and made a call before finally coming down from the roof.”
Another stunned neighbour told how the man made a rude gesture as he walked past. He said: “They should get the fire brigade up here with a hose that would soon get him off the roof and sort him out.
“What a carry-on and waste of police resources the cops have been here for hours.”
The man stayed up on the roof despite torrential downpours and only agreed to come down when police negotiators allowed him to take a call.
After more than six hours police took the suspect away in handcuffs in a blacked-out car.
He had been targeted in a joint operation by officers from Tayside and Strathclyde Police force.
A spokesperson for Strathclyde Police said: “A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged in relation to an alleged stabbing.”
He appeared at Perth Sheriff Court on Monday August 18 on an attempted murder charge. He faces three other charges of assaulting women, mostly by allegedly spitting on them.
He made no plea or declaration and the case was continued. He was remanded in custody.
