WELCOME TO CHURCH ROAD

By Caireen Kelly

a well-known street in Barrhead is set to have its name changed under plans for regeneration.

Part of Glen Street will be transformed into Church Road after it was suggested by Councillor Douglas Yates and then approved by all the elected members for Barrhead and East Renfrewshire Council.

The new road which will be constructed opposite Ralston Road, Barrhead will open in Mid-September.

Councillor Yates said: “Many names with links to Barrhead’s heritage were considered and discounted one by one for various reasons.

“While I’m aware that three churches are built on Main Street with a further three just off Main Street, and another three in Cross Arthurlie Street, I would have thought that in a town with ten church buildings, plus other faith traditions who meet in facilities outwith the town, there may already have been a Church Road or Street, but that is not the case.

“It seems appropriate to call the new road Church Road to acknowledge the religious diversity in Barrhead and be symbolic of a new link between communities.”

Church Road will form a traffic lights controlled junction with Cross Arthurlie Street at a point between the Methodist Church and the taxi office.

It will become a major link road, taking traffic off Cross Arthurlie Street, particularly coming from the Paisley direction wishing to travel to places such as Auchenback, Springhill, Newton Mearns and Parkhouse.

This aims to relieve vehicle pressure on Allan’s Corner Roundabout allowing for a better flow of traffic along Cross Arthurlie Street.

A spokesman for East Renfrewshire Council said: “Councillor Yates felt that naming the new road would remove any confusion with the old Glen Street.

“And it would also symbolise important and very tangible progress of the Better Barrhead regeneration drive.”

“He consulted Councillors Buchanan, Devlin and Cunningham on the proposal which reflects the proximity of churches and they were happy to back the proposal which has now gone through our council process for naming new roads.”
