Youngsters get a touch of tennis fever
TENNIS fever is sweeping the nation once again with the return of Wimbledon – and local youngsters snapped up the chance to learn more about the fun sport recently.
Children from Carlibar and Neilston Primary schools were amongst a handful of youngsters from across the local authority area who were invited to take part in a special tournament at Whitecraigs Tennis Club.
The children attended the event - organised by Active Schools – after school and played against each other in a boys and girls tournament.
Active Schools Co-ordinator Kirsteen Torrance said: “It’s a fun tournament and gives children the opportunity to see the sport in action.
“You could see they were improving after 10 minutes, it opened their eyes to what tennis is about. It was really nice to see.”
She added: “The children thouroughly enjoyed the challenge of playing in a full size tennis court and enjoyed the experience of playing with so many children from across the authority.”
The Active Schools team, headed up by Ian Pye, invited schools to attend the tournament as part of the ACTIVE 8 PE curriculum that Active Schools rolled out at the start of the academic year. This is a new inititative aimed at increasing and improving the access to sports within and out with the school.
Kirsteen said: “Sports were chosen to link up with the available sports clubs in the community and facilities and already this has been a huge success with numbers attending local tennis, golf, rugby, basketball, netball, hockey, athletics and football clubs increasing since its introduction. We are working hard to increase the links between schools and local sports clubs in the Barrhead area.” For information about summer programmes –including a sports camp at Williamwood High school –visit www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk
